Vinyl-clad wood windows and doors

Vinyl is an excellent exterior material for windows and doors when paired with a strong structural core. That’s why we use vinyl cladding on our wood 200 Series and 400 Series windows and doors. Our vinyl cladding is called Perma-Shield® cladding. It provides weather protection and a smooth finish on the exterior while wood cores provide strength, stability, insulation, and natural beauty on the interior. Find out more about the benefits of this material construction or start exploring our Perma-Shield clad-wood 200 Series and 400 Series products.

What is a vinyl-clad window? What is a vinyl-clad door?

A window or door with vinyl protection on its exterior and a strong structural core made of another material is vinyl clad. We call the vinyl cladding we use on our wood doors and windows Perma-Shield cladding. Perma-Shield cladding provides a tough, protective shell to protect windows and doors from the weather while also safeguarding the wood inside. It repels water, resists dents,* and stays beautiful year after year. We pioneered this system more than 50 years ago and still use it today on both our 200 Series and 400 Series products. It’s a time-tested window construction method that supports long-term window and door performance.

How do all-vinyl windows and doors compare to vinyl-clad windows and doors?

All-vinyl windows and doors don't have the structural strength of our vinyl-clad products. While all-vinyl products give you the benefits of weather resistance and low maintenance, vinyl-clad windows and doors combine those benefits of vinyl with the strength, durability, and natural insulating properties of wood. Here's a side-by-side comparison:

All-vinyl windows and doors Vinyl-clad wood windows and doors
Strength and durability Products made primarily of low-quality vinyl expand when the sun heats them up and contract in the cold. Over time, this makes vinyl windows susceptible to warping and seal failure. Because our Perma-Shield-clad products have a wood core, they have both the low-maintenance weather protective qualities of vinyl products and the natural strength, stability, and durability of wood, making them dependable long-term.
Beautiful aesthetics Common complaints about low-quality vinyl windows include unsightly corner joints and finishes that are susceptible to scratching, blistering, pitting, and cracking. A smooth, color-rich exterior finish is one of the benefits of our Perma-Shield-clad windows and doors, along with the timeless beauty of wood indoors.
Low maintenance Some vinyl windows are painted, which means they’ll eventually need to be repainted. Perma-Shield-clad products never need painting. The cladding repels water, resists dents, and protects the wood underneath.
Energy efficiency Vinyl isn’t a conductive material but because it lacks strength, it’s susceptible to warping and other issues that detract from efficiency. Our Perma-Shield exterior cladding adds to the window or door’s stability and therefore improves the efficiency of wood frames and panels contributing to increased indoor comfort.
Price While it depends on product design and manufacturer, vinyl windows and doors are typically the least expensive upfront. However, if their quality is lacking, they may require replacement sooner, which could make them more expensive long term. Among our Perma-Shield-clad products, the 200 Series product line offers the best value and the 400 Series product line offers the widest selection of colors, sizes, and options.

As you can see, all-vinyl windows simply aren’t comparable to our Perma-Shield-clad products. With their solid wood cores and monolithic claddings, our 200 Series and 400 Series windows and doors are higher quality overall.

If you’re searching for the affordability usually associated with all-vinyl products, consider our 100 Series product line. It’s made of Fibrex® composite material, which is twice as strong as vinyl at a competitive price.

How do our vinyl-clad products compare to other claddings?

Most wood windows sold today are clad wood, which gives the advantage of wood interiors and protected exteriors. Our Perma-Shield vinyl cladding is used to protect the exteriors or our 200 Series and 400 Series product lines. Let’s look at how Perma-Shield cladding compares to other claddings used in window and door manufacturing.

Roll-form aluminum-clad wood vs. Perma-Shield-clad wood:

Roll-form aluminum is a less durable type of aluminum cladding than the heavy-gauge-extruded aluminum that we use to clad our products. Rolled aluminum is made of a lighter-weight sheet metal that’s bent into shape using a series of rollers. So, while aluminum might sound like a superior material compared to vinyl, the process we use to make our Perma-Shield claddings offers better protection. It’s vacuum-formed offering monolithic protection, an attractive finish, and low maintenance. This is why our 200 Series and 400 Series products offer superior performance at a competitive price to roll-form aluminum-clad wood products.

Don’t take claddings at face value. While aluminum and fiberglass might sound like they’d offer superior performance, the reality is that the quality of manufactured materials can vary greatly. Not only that, but the design, or the way that the cladding is applied, also makes a difference. Our vacuum-formed Perma-Shield claddings offer protection and lasting, low-maintenance finishes for better overall performance. That’s why our 400 Series are the most recommended clad-wood windows by contractors.* In fact, 400 Series are the clad-wood windows more contractors would choose for their own home.*
